In 1958 Ken Crawford opened a humble fish and chip shop in the quiet rural village of Douglas in county Cork. Fifty one years on, and while Douglas has transformed into a sprawling suburban megalopolis, one small ex-cottage right in the centre has hardly changed at all. Apart from the wall colours and a menu 1950's locals couldn't have dreamed of the humble fish and chip shop remains so. Only the incessant queues are a testament to the attention given to tradition and innovation, quality and value, serious devotion and light hearted self-deprecation.

"There is nothing nicer than standing in line around the iron room divider in KC's with a gaggle of kids, waiting for your lunch or dinner order - leghorn burger; meat pattie; scampi; chips by 3, please - as the kids scan the posters and writings on the wall and, slowly but surely, begin to see and enjoy all the witty jokes that Wes Crawford and his crew have used to decorate the shop. This is one funny place, and the humour is a match with the smart, good food that KC's offers. It is sort of fast food, but it is properly and - above all - lovingly made and cooked, and it is the fast food that that gives fast food a good name."
